With the current pandemic, the state of the music and touring industry has dramatically changed. Where were you when everything was brought to a halt?
I was 'trapped' in southern Thailand with my young son. Not the worst of prisons, to be sure, but it put some serious roadblocks in my contract narrative work. The pandemic upside, at least creatively, was to push full steam ahead on this daunting multi-genre music and video epic for my boy.
How has that affected your plans for the coming year? Did you have a tour planned, upcoming album release?
I had originally planned on continuing with remote work for the game writing industry with the goal of booking live shows in client cities. This is the main reason for focusing extra efforts and resources on creating a strong video component for the album, which would originally have been conveyed live with clips and storytelling between songs.
What have you been doing to fill/make the most of your new-found free time at home? How are you supporting your mental health through all of this?
I was fortunate in landing an intriguing narrative gig in the Netherlands for a wellness tech firm at the start of 2021. They've been incredible supportive with offering flexibility to finish and promote the album while also attending to my #1 priority and sole inspiration for the project — my son. Meanwhile, keeping the creative fires burning is essential for maintaining some semblance of mental health, so I've been chipping away at a few other storytelling projects while crossing my fingers for the live show experience to rise from the ashes...
As things are reopening & restrictions are lifting have you booked any new gigs? Tours? Etc? If your region is still under restriction, how are dealing with the Covid third wave?
The album just came out in July, so there are some early discussions of a few theatre and festival shows in Europe. Would love to hit the home soil and do a Canadian tour next spring/summer if the Covid fates are willing and the stars align. Meanwhile, the goal is to do a killer virtual show with my main collaborator(s) in Berlin by year's end.
Favourite Starlite Room Moment?
I've heard GREAT things about the venue. Hopefully my fav moment will be the first time I step onstage there...
Do you have a message for everyone at home reading this?
To my European friends — less beer, more Vitamin D. For the Southeast Asia homies — prayers to brave the tourism drought just a little longer. And to my Canadian peeps — the heatwave made me jealous, so the grass is always greener XO
